Backstage with Rumba Con Son

The musicians in a band are very much like the notes in a chord! They come together to create a full rich sound, but also have their own identity.

Much like the conga can break away from the drum pattern for a brief solo in the middle of a rumba jam, any of the musicians from Rumba con Son can also be found alone with his/her instrument at the park on a hot Summer day or in the recording studio on a late night doing something he/she doesn't usually do with the band.

This section of our site is dedicated to the 10 individual and distinct musicians who come together to form Orquesta Rumba con Son.

Jose Abreu

Jose was born in the northern part of the Dominican Republic (El Cibao), and came to the United States at the age of 13. He started his formal music training at the age of 7 studying piano for a number of years as part of the school curriculum. Having studied music theory and composition in college, Jose began arranging music for solo singers and bands while attending law school at Rutgers School of Law in Newark, New Jersey.

A lawyer by day, Jose has been performing professionally in restaurants and night clubs since the age of 15 accompanying solo singers and as pianist for numerous local bands in New Jersey. In 1997, he, with 2 other friends, started a Merengue band named Orquesta Suprema. The band released its first original recording the following year. The album, called “Poniendo la Ley,” featured 10 original tracks. Jose arranged 7 of the 10 tracks, directed the recording sessions, and played a key role in the production and mixing of the album. As music director for the band, Jose was responsible for the band’s repertoire, and the excellence which earned the band a good reputation in the central New Jersey area for close to 10 years.

Jose has also produced numerous albums recorded at his studio, and continues to arrange music in a variety of genres for artists recording at his studio.
